About the Scholarship Fund

The Louella W. Norfleet Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc. was established in 1996 in memory of an educator (teacher/principal), who changed the structure of delivery services to children in Edgecombe County in North Carolina. Due to the increase in enrollment in her school, she was instrumental in obtaining pledges to build Willow Grove Elementary School to accommodate students.

For more than forty-six years she advocated for students and received recognition for her work from community leaders, state administration and President Lyndon Johnson. As such, the Fund was established to continue her vision. Her mission was that an investment in the future (our children) yielded a stronger community, a generation of political leaders, physicians, scientists, astronauts, teachers, business leaders, entrepreneurs and community advocates.

Our Mission

The mission of the Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization is to address our nation’s continued progress in its recovery effort through its citizenry’s commitment to serve. The members of the LWN Board of Directors continue to respond by providing educational webinars and college fairs to inform youth of educational opportunities. To this end, the Fund has awarded financial assistance to applicants enrolling in colleges and universities across the country; students who have worked diligently to attend a college or university but cannot realize their dream because of inadequate funds. We have ensured that the dream becomes a reality and are proud of the accomplishments of those receiving assistance from the Fund. The Fund assists students who graduate from high school with a grade point average of 2.5 or better.
